The program builds on Florence’s long-standing and distinguished tradition of scholarship in the study of the ancient world. It provides comprehensive training in the archaeological disciplines, with particular emphasis on the civilizations of Italy, the Mediterranean, and the Near East from Prehistory through the Middle Ages.
The degree is structured into four distinct curricula — Prehistoric Archaeology, Near Eastern Archaeology, Classical Archaeology and Medieval Archaeology — allowing students to tailor their academic path while addressing the specific methodological and disciplinary requirements of each field. Each curriculum includes internships and laboratory activities within departmental facilities, as well as placements and research campaigns conducted in Italy and abroad. These experiences enable students to deepen their knowledge across a range of disciplines and to develop substantial practical expertise, both in fieldwork and in the study and analysis of archaeological materials.
The broad and interdisciplinary training offered by the degree program equips graduates to undertake research activities with a critical and independent approach. It opens career opportunities in teaching, heritage authorities, museums, cooperatives and specialized companies, laboratories dedicated to analysis and conservation and the field of specialist publishing. Finally, the Master’s Degree in Archaeology provides access to PhD programs, Schools of Specialization and second-level Master’s programs in related areas.
